My Weekly 11+ Group for Year Fives & Sixes

I have twin boys who are at competitive London day schools and have both had Nick help with English and maths over the last couple of years. Not only do my boys greatly enjoy his classes but his level of professionalism is next to none. He thoroughly prepares materials for each class and gives honest and constructive feedback. I couldn’t recommend him more!

What are these?

As an experienced entrance exam specialist, I am very familiar with the journey students must go on to be ready for their 11+. I know the different question types found within the papers; indeed, I write resources for Exam Papers Plus, so there’s a chance you’ve already encountered my material.

These classes are designed to build student confidence in all areas, focusing primarily on English and mathematics. While I have run weekly preparation classes for other companies, this is the first time I have done so under my own name, so I am excited to cater it entirely to the specific needs of the group.

What Material will be used?

Each week, I will prepare a bespoke pack for the students based on their needs and any specific parent requests. I'll be using my own newly developed resources as much as possible* so you won't come across duplicate material anywhere else. These classes will be the only way to receive these packs.

Packs will include my notes on the topic, answers, homework activities and extension tasks for quicker students.

And What is covered?

In English, we will divide time between writing and comprehension, looking at the different forms of writing tasks, question types and text formats. This will include non-fiction and poetry, as well as classic fiction and some more rogue choices. Students will be taught how to answer discursive essays, have their descriptive writing interrogated, and their vocabulary expanded.

In Mathematics, we will explore the Year 6 syllabus, learning topics they will yet to have encountered, and building towards worded problems. Tricker puzzle-style questions will be woven into our teaching, and each session will start with a 'problem of the week'. My two goals are: to ensure students are familiar and capable of answering all of the standard question types, and to build confidence in facing the more unusual problems the 11+ can throw out.

*I will rarely produce my own material for reasoning, other than notes, as writing these questions is prohibitively time-consuming…

Why not other classes?

Many of the other classes are great - I’ve taught several of them! However, there are several perks associated with mine.

  • I will be designing resources for our lessons - most of which will be uniquely created on a weekly basis with your children in mind.

  • Group sizes will always be capped at six. This comes from experience: it is enough to foster camaraderie and competition while still permitting detailed marking of students' work and sufficient individual attention.

  • The scheme of work will be flexible: if the group needs attention in one area, that's what we'll focus on. The programme is not set in stone.

  • You get me. My waiting list for 1:1 keeps growing. My experience and testimonials speak for themselves.

  • Classes will be held each Sunday morning from 08:00-10:00.

They will be taught on a rolling basis. Your children can join at any point.

  • Classes will be £70 for two hours. Upfront payment is not required (but is acceptable.)

This price is set to cover time spent preparing the resources and marking student work.

    Cancellation Policy:

If your student cannot make the lesson, I require 48 hours notice. Cancellations made within 48 hours for any reason will be charged half-price. Any cancellation within 24 hours will be charged full price.

  • No - another advantage of choosing this class. You aren’t required to pay upfront, and if your circumstances change or you decide not to go for the 11+, you aren’t locked in. Things can change and you shouldn’t be penalised for it.

  • These classes are for students aiming for the top schools. To that end, they will be an appropriate difficulty, which some students might find challenging. However, I’ll be basing the difficulty on the needs of the group and balancing it accordingly.

If you’re worried about this, please get in touch.

  • Currently: no, the class is the only way to receive this material.
